Why is it that when people meditate in the morning, their brain waves change to alpha?

Alpha brainwaves happen any time you close your eyes and relax, doesn’t matter the time of day. A lot of people mistake the alpha state for meditating, but really it’s just the first step on the road to trance.

One thing that makes alpha waves go away, even with eyes closed and awake, is tiredness. Your brain has to exert energy to stay awake, nothing is left over for a trance journey. For this reason it’s often recommended to meditate in the morning.

When I was learning how to meditate, my teacher works watch me closely and announce when I had reached alpha. He didn’t have an EEG machine but I could tell that something was different in my head. Reaching alpha was the first stage, then we would start visualizing, deepening the state. To get to alpha he would direct me with his voice, with hypnotic instructions, not unlike what you’d get with a YouTube video.

We did these sessions in the early evening usually. I didn’t have a strenuous job so there was plenty of energy left over to meditate.
