Is it alright to believe in my own version of God, rather than the one I've been told to believe in?

The dirty little secret of religion is that everyone does this. It's the primary reason why religions evolve over time. People still argue over the Trinity, even though it was settled theologically over a thousand years ago. Belief can't be dictated.
