Why were people in the past driven by ideology and sentiment as opposed to scientific and rational thought process (the way people today are)?

People today are just as driven by ideology and sentiment, and are just as prone to lying to themselves about it. We just know more about the sins of the bast because lots of people took the time and effort to figure it out and publish their findings.
