It helps because forgetting destroys forward progress. This was something I learned from George Gurdjieff. Forget about the enneagram fluff and focus on his books.

Learning how to remember is akin to learning how to meditate. At first mind wanders constantly, it’s really hard to obtain a solid 30 seconds of clear mind. With the right focus and practice, one can meditate constantly for 15 minutes to even hours.

Well, remembering is a low-grade meditation that you do all the time. When meditating, you begin with an object held in mind. When remembering, your object is your self, your connection with divinity, your dedication to the path of knowledge and wisdom.

Because if you don’t, then what you find is that you’ll get a whole lot of energy and motivation to “do spiritual stuff” then at some point, the mundane world will pull your attention back, and you’ll just do that until you ‘wake up’ again and realize that there’s this whole big world you were trying to explore.

Once I spent some time with this, I realized it’s a huge key that unlocks agency where it comes to spirituality. Too many of us treat the spiritual world as an entertainment channel. Something that comes to us, because the work involved in going to it just seems like too much to do all at once.

Remembering lets you space it out, gives you a path towards regular, deliberate practice. Practicing without remembering just becomes rote, but when you can remember your divinity, the practice takes on an air of power and mystery.
