Reality is predicated on rules. Rules specify interaction. When you hit a billiard ball into another billiard ball, a zillion little things go into just how that interaction goes down, and you can practice the craft of billiards until you have a great deal of control over how those interactions happen.

To shift realities, shift the rules. Imagine going from survival mode Minecraft to creative mode. In Minecraft, survival mode has you gathering resources and dealing with enemies. In creative, you can pick whatever you want out of a palette and enemies can’t hurt you.

Your mind might immediately go to the fact that you can fly and conjure up any block you could ever want and place it immediately, my mind goes to the fact that survival and creative have different goals, and it’s this that you should really consider when you wish to “reality shift.”

Don’t worry so much about changing the rules. Instead, change the goal. What are you trying to accomplish and why? Are you trying to showcase your prowess at following a bunch of really hard rules? Or do you want a realm where you can display your creativity more easily and freely?

This shift in goal necessitates a further shift in focus, or, how you choose to approach your time spent in that reality.

So, say you’re at school, and you have to do a project. The ordinary rules of school and such might specify a boring, dry collection of tasks. You can choose to instead shift your goal from merely getting the project done to one in which you can express your creativity as well.

This means your focus goes from “just getting it done” to “expressing myself.” You get to choose these rules, and they can intersect or ignore the ‘real’ rules as you see fit. Of course, the set of rules you ignored doesn’t just go away because you decided to ignore it, but you did manage to exist for a small time in an alternate reality of your own choosing.

You can apply this to anything. One trope in romance books / movies is the protagonist simply ignoring the rules of society and creating his own world for his lady love to enter into. Plenty of business books revolve around transforming the world of work into something soul-affirming and not crushing.

Once you understand that it’s really about rules, and the mystic aspects come later when you can understand them better, you can get started. There are magical aspects to this, but unless and until you’re attuned to it, magic can happen right in front of you and you won’t recognize it. Walk before you run.
