If you began to see signs of God, would you insist you were going crazy, before accepting them as the evidence you were demanding, should He be real?

This is just a garden-variety sense of intellectual superiority. Atheists think theists are stupid to believe in God. They won’t admit it, but it’s at the very core of atheism. If they didn’t think it was stupid, then they’d be agnostics and not atheists.
