I could give you the one I feel is most correct, but, well, it’s so misrepresented by just about everyone you’d find that professes it that you’ll not find much that you like about it. I could write pages and pages of silly argument explaining why I think it, and it’d fall on deaf ears, nothing more than the hot air of yet another wannabe Internet spiritual guru.

Instead if you’re looking for spiritual inspiration, I recommend finding a nice idea marketplace where the collective written wisdom of the world’s spiritual thinkers are gathered. I refer, of course, to spiritual bookstores. Or if you can’t find one of these special places, a regular bookstore will do.

Block off a few hours. I’ve spent many hours over many days over a few years in bookstores, gravitating, over time, to the spiritual sections. Pick up books at random, read a few pages, see if they grab you. If you have the money, buy the ones you find yourself going back to over and over again.

It’s the only real way to get a baseline understanding of what spirituality really is. That basic fundamental thing that humans do, to attempt foolhardily to banish the dark uncertainty with clean, rational principles.

Schools of spirituality don’t happen in a vacuum, so another place to spend time is in the history section. Learn about the people that came up with all these beautiful ideas.

Trust me, it’s far less important that you find the right spiritual ideas than it is that you do the hard work of inflaming and informing your spiritual imagination.

Because that’s what spirituality is in the end, the transformation of the ugly mundane, rule-based world we are born into, to a lovely, inspired, place of wonder where everything has a place and a reason and a purpose.

Whatever helps you along to that goal, well, that’s the spirituality I recommend you hold on to, for dear life if necessary.
