The Egg is a short story written by Andy Weir. It’s a fantastic little parable about a guy that dies and talks to God. Go read it and come back, you’ll thank me, trust me.
This short story illustrates a property of spirituality that is truly transcendent. It doesn’t matter whether you believe in God or reincarnation or not, the concept holds a deep allure.
The God portrayed in the short story isn’t some moral majority zealot, he’s just a guy doing a thing. Humanizing God is fantastic spirituality that I wish more people would do, one of the reasons I loved Bruce Almighty so much.
The portrayed God does not have to be Jesus, or Allah, or any deity, he can be all deities. If I can be allowed a little creative license with Weir’s character, perhaps he looks deeply into the hearts of people and societies and chooses a form that everyone can relate to.
Spirituality makes you think deeper about things. Maybe you believe in reincarnation, maybe you don’t, but the exercise of unifying all forms of religious / spiritual belief under one set of guiding philosophies is a good exercise, it leads you to interesting places regardless of where your own personal feels lie on the matter.
