Why does it seem like the American career world is more cut-throat than the British one?

My guess is it’s because the Brits are way more comfortable with hierarchy, whilst the Americans are huge believers in meritocracy. Also in the US you really get shafted if you don’t have a high-paying job. Your options are sharply curtailed and you get very little in the way of disposable income, whereas anything worth doing in the States generally costs some amount of money. You don’t get decent health care, having a low income here really sucks.

So people get really protective of their stations.
