How can I have a compelling argument about the existence of God when talking to my atheist/scientific friends?

God is not a logical concept so you can’t approach questions of belief and spirituality from that frame. You can no more prove God than you could any other irrational position.

But everybody is at least a little bit spiritual. Everybody has beliefs. It’s just a question of whether those beliefs involve invisible sky fairies or not. If you’re watching somebody talk about something, a lot of times you sense that they’re saying something irrational, that doesn’t quite make sense.

If you question them about it, usually you can work out the principles they’re operating from. That’s the gateway into the belief structures of atheists. They might not believe in God, but they do have beliefs and you can explore those beliefs the exact same way you might explore other theological questions.

And it’s easy to frame these beliefs in terms of religion. Richard Stallman, stalwart atheist, is the head of a church, the Church of Emacs. They have tons of fun pretending to be religious. But they are religious, they just don’t believe in God. They believe in free software.

Theists just choose to make those beliefs about the basic structure of reality. If atheists could realize that they’re just being delusional in their conviction that they don’t have any beliefs, then the Internet could be a much happier place. But nope, everybody just yaks on and on about their own dogmas.
