My boss doesn't let me use unit testing or creating a clean code. Should I quit?

I would not burn your savings on a startup if this is the only reason you’re doing it. It’s really bad personal finance. Put the money into a safety net. Pay off your house and car, get out of debt if you are in it. You don’t need any money to start a startup, you can move in with friends and cook all your own meals.

That said, let me move on to your career concern. Honestly, if it’s not unit testing, it’s some other thing you’ll be complaining about. I wish we would take the time to refactor all our code. But I don’t even think my coworkers really know how. Some shops don’t even use source control.

There is always some fancy new paradigm / tool that we think we absolutely need. We don’t. It’s the business that decides how many resources to devote to the codebase. And if you go off and start your own startup, even if it’s successful, you’re going to have to decide how many resources to devote to your codebase too. Don’t be too surprised if you turn into your boss.
