How can I tell a friend she can't sing without hurting her feelings?

Don’t. There’s just no point.

Musicians support and encourage each other. If she wants to put time and effort into making music, invite her over and let her work on her singing. Offer pointers and don’t judge.

If she puts enough time into it, she’ll eventually realize how bad that recording sounded. But it won’t matter, because she’ll be much better. If she doesn’t put any time into it, then oh well, it wasn’t meant to be.

In none of these scenarios does brutal honesty help out at all.
