I know plenty of older people who stayed in programming rather than move up to manager. You can do anything you want with your career, it’s your playground. Some move into business, some bounce around different types of organizations, some become really highly-paid consultants.

If you set your mind to it, and apply consistent effort towards getting there, you can do anything.
