Do most web/mobile developers include rapid visual prototyping/mockups in their workflow?

It really depends on what kind of team you’re working with. If you have a designer, then generally you’ll get photoshop comps that you work off of. These are easy to deal with, you just slap down some markup and basic styling, then tweak it in Chrome until it looks like the comp. I’d say this is how most teams work.

Some teams have front-end developers / designers. These guys are the ones you’d see using specialized prototyping tools like basalmiq. They’ll go to the client and use the tool as a communication medium to nail down appearance and behavior, then will build based off of that.

But a programmer will generally find such a tool to be slower and to introduce more friction than it’s worth. Programmers generally aren’t expected to do visual design.
