As a web developer and software engineer, which computer or laptop should I buy?

This is primarily a matter of culture, and secondarily a matter of personal preference. If you’re in a Rails shop, generally Rails devs use MacBooks. If you’re doing Windows dev, you’ll be using a specced-out Dell. If you’re partial to Linux, then most devs will use ThinkPads.

I’d just buy what you like for your personal and let whatever company hires you provide you with a work machine.
