Okay.

If you actually want to work on space robotics, then you need to get hired onto one of the very very few companies that actually work in that niche. Then you have to ensure that you will actually work on a project for that company that fits that extreme, economically-useless (right now) specialty.

The best way to get hired onto one of these companies to do exactly that is to spend every waking moment diving into that field and learning everything you can about it. Forget about a social life. Forget about any hope that you will actually succeed in your desire. You’re throwing your whole life to fate.

Someone once asked on Quora, what would it take to become high-functioning like Elon Musk. Justine Musk, Elon’s ex-wife, answered and said that Elon or someone with Elon’s unique mindset would never, ever think to ask this sort of question on Quora. He was too busy being Elon Musk to be concerned with listening to other people’s ideas on how to be more effective.

I’m not saying this to dissuade you. If you had this kind of drive, you wouldn’t be able to be dissuaded, you’d just push through regardless of the difficulties. What I’m trying to convey is that doing something like this is a hell of a lot of work.

I think of myself as someone who could have been Elon Musk if I’d been motivated to. But I’m not. I don’t have that kind of drive. I’m smart, really smart. But I focus on different problems.

What interests me goes nowhere near the big glamorous problems like space exploration. I like web development and I’m pretty good at it.

The big thing I’ve learned about web development over the years is that, it’s extremely high impact if you do it really well. How big of an economic impact do you think WordPress has made? It made a whole section of people able to have a web enterprise that were never able to before.

Ask yourself whether the thing you want to do is more because it’s glamorous than because it’s high-impact. I’m not saying you can’t get into space robots. What I’m saying is that if you were really into space robots, you wouldn’t have to ask this question on Quora. You’d already be into space robotics and you’d be asking how to get a job there.
