Is theology even possible? Why would a transcendent God be constrained by truth?

Theology is possible because God makes it possible. God is not constrained by truth, He chooses to adhere to it.

If you can, sit and meditate on that for a minute, it has some very far-reaching implications. Among these implications, it means that it literally doesn’t matter what theology you conjure up, God will find a way to validate it for you as a nice thank-you for taking the time to think hard about what God is and wants.

You don’t have to be Christian. You don’t have to be Jewish, you can be Buddhist. You can be as horrible as you want in the name of God. God is all-powerful, all-knowing. You think he can’t use that for His own ends?

Believing in God lets God put ideas and whims into your heart that you think is coming from you, but is actually coming from Him. You doing these things and thinking about these things, because you already believe in God, means you’re doing God’s bidding, and it’s all fine because you already believe in God.

All theology is fine because God is all-powerful and doesn’t need you to believe in the perfect truth. You don’t even need to believe in Him being all-powerful. God can work with that too.

I’ve always been amused by people who think that God’s might is the coolest thing about God. For me, it’s never been His might that impressed me. Any human can assume the power of life and death by picking up a gun. Pure might has never awed or inspired me. What impresses me about God is His capacity for subtlety. Omnipotence doesn’t just manifest in the macro.

It’s this capacity, this wondrous ability of God to be all things to all people, that brings me to tears whenever I consider it. He can even work with atheists only considering the moral implications of an all-powerful deity.

Anybody doing philosophical anything is doing a type of theology, whether they think of it that way or not. Any argument over morals is a theological argument. You’ve just managed to convince yourself it’s not. God truly is omnipresent, and you get closer and closer to Him to the extent that you contemplate greater and greater truth.
