I make six figures as a web developer. There are two main things you need in order to do this.

You need to be willing to move to a big enough market to sustain those kinds of jobs. A good judge is to go onto job sites and look at advertised salaries. If you see a good number of jobs listed with six figure salaries, then there’s a good chance you can nab one of them. Four Oaks, NC probably couldn’t pay its doctors six figures, much less its web developers. Move to Raleigh or Charlotte.

Then you have to keep successively moving up the value chain. You have to keep studying and learning and growing as a developer. There’s a lot to know. Javascript frameworks, database optimization, devops. You need knowledge in all of these to be considered for one of the top jobs. Never stop learning.

Which languages? You need to specialize in one general purpose programming language like Ruby or C#, and know all of the other ones, like Javascript and SQL and CSS. You especially need to know Javascript very well, but NodeJS jobs aren’t exactly falling out of trees right now, so you’d best learn one of the main ones. You should not be afraid to get your hands dirty with other languages that aren’t in your wheelhouse like Python or Perl.
