What transitional job should I consider before applying for a web-developer job?

I took a job in a testing department at Panasonic Automotive as a stop-gap to help me break into the web development world. Test departments are easy to find jobs in, you don’t have to have a lot of skills. Downside is the work is pretty boring. There’s usually a lot of downtime though, so you can use that to study coding and do side projects.

We have a QA tester that is working on test automation in his down time, I consider that a great way to get better at coding.
