How did Robert Lee Ermey manage to not blink at all throughout the movie "Full Metal Jacket"?

I took screen acting classes, generally you’re taught to not blink during close up shoots, because it looks like you’re pulling down a giant shade really fast and letting back up. It’s really distracting. If you practice enough you can learn to not blink for a long period of time.
