Is website development dead as a business?

No but it’s dying. It’s getting too easy to use tools like SquareSpace and they get better all the time. It won’t be long before the smaller players are rendered unprofitable by the unstoppable march of the market.

I saw the writing on the wall years ago and jumped into a corporate career. I was at a networking meetup last night and got to talking with a prominent member of the community, I was clearing more in salary than he was taking home from his business.

My bio says I work with CNN but it’s actually through a consulting company. This company mostly chases big contracts with large companies like CNN, Cox, and Cisco. It’s just not profitable to chase smaller contracts anymore.

You can still make a living doing it but it’s going to get worse and worse as the competition gets better.
