Human rights are a controversial topic. It’s easy to say that people should enjoy certain rights, but once you start digging down into specifics it can be hard to really define. Plus it’s usually one nation meddling in the affairs of other nations. How far are modern nations willing to go to promote human rights abroad?
They can also be very costly. Look in your pocket, imagine you had two hundred dollars there, money you earned and had planned on spending on stuff you wanted. What if some politician wanted to take half of it and use it to help people you’ve never met before in your whole life? Everything has a price tag.
This isn’t even taking into account the fact that a lot of charity often gets diverted to line people’s pockets. It can be very difficult to ensure that resources devoted to altruism don’t end up going to greed instead.
So it’s not so much the idea of helping others that people don’t care for, it’s often the practicalities that have them digging in their heels.
