It is until it isn’t.
Ego is a person standing in the way of themselves. You can’t even see anything that’s not you. And you can’t even see yourself doing it.
There’s a two-step process to escaping ego’s grip. First you must learn how to surrender. Surrender means taking everything that is contributing to your state of affairs, good or bad, and accepting it, in all ways. This preoccupation with self exists, it’s coming from you and not others or God or whatever, and it’s keeping you from seeing something greater.
Once seen, accepted, and surrendered, you need to take the next step, which is to see, accept, and surrender not just the self, but also the need to escape the self. You are you, and you’ll never stop generating the reality of being you. I call this second step spiritual ego. You’re an amazing, phenomenal person and the ego hides this from you just as it hides everything else. Acceptance that you are someone who deserves love and acceptance and has agency despite sometimes being stuck up their own behinds, that’s how it just has to be.
First accepting ego, then accepting yourself, you can finally operate outside of ego’s death grip. It never stops being tricky, but it gets easier over time.
