Why is saying "people of color" a better or more neutral term than "colored people?"

It’s fairly simple. One term was created by colonial overlords as a term intended to demean and subjugate, the other was created by those subjugated people to try to shake off racist terminology. Just the fact that white people have to use the term that the people being referred to want them to use
