I am lonely and agonized by my high intelligence. I fail to relate to anyone and feel frustrated by everything. I feel like an alien in this world. How would you deal with this problem? Should I just isolate myself or find a society of similar individuals?

When I was younger I could not relate to anyone and I felt frustrated a lot. Exceptional intelligence has the strange tendency to make a person feel very alone, even when he is surrounded by people.

I eventually fixed the problem by going out and talking to a lot of people, especially girls. Eventually I realized that being intelligent didn’t give me the humongous advantage over others that I seemed to think it did, and I mellowed out.

Even so, it took a long friendship turned dating turned relationship (with a girl I’d met in the crazy-talking-to-everyone-phase) for me to really relax and open up to the world. I owe that woman my happiness, and I’d give up anything for her.

So, no, don’t isolate yourself, and don’t try to find a society. Just try harder to connect with ordinary people.
