How do you maintain a cordial relationship with an ex after a breakup?

You can’t be cordial with someone that has a bone to pick with you. You either have to fight it out and come to a mutual resolution or cut him out of your life the best you can.

If I were you, I’d tell him that unless he can keep it civil, then he can fuck off and forget about any kind of repayment. Expect him to not respect your ultimatum and just cut him off.

I see men pulling this kind of power-grab bullshit all the time. He cheats, he lies, then he justifies it in his stupid little head that it was the lady that was wrong. (that’s how my dad treated my mom) Then he makes a play thinking she’ll come crying back. Guess what, it doesn’t work out that way and he’s left holding his dick.

Expect everything you hear from him after that as some bullshit scheme designed to a) get you back and b) retain his ego belief that he’s the one in charge.

There is no reconciliation here. There’s no reason to even be speaking to him. There’s no civility possible. Just put him out of your mind and move on. Jackasses like him don’t deserve your energy.
