It’s not so much the factual content of the words as the context in which you say them. If you’re trying to downplay racism with this little statement of fact, then yes, you are being racist by disavowing the systemic oppression of black people in the US.
In proper context, one would see that poverty is the main driver of violent crime, black areas have higher levels of poverty, and therefore it stands to reason that black people kill each other more often. It has little to do with race, and if you control for poverty, everyone kills each other at roughly the same rate.
If, on the other hand, you are having a civilized discussion concerning steps that we could take to reduce the murder rate, and one of your colleagues is under the mistaken and strange opinion that white people still organize into posses and hunt down black people to kill them for fun, then you’re probably fine.
