Do you think most couples nowadays have unconditional or conditional love?

One has to be taught how to love unconditionally. It doesn't come naturally. The good news is that the tutelage isn't hard to find. The bad is that it's usually not very good tutelage.

Meaning, for instance, it's hard to what to do in situations that try your patience. It's all well and good to turn the other cheek once. But a relationship involves annoyances on a sometimes daily basis.

You need to practice to keep it up. You need a continual source of knowledge and inspiration. Many people turn to religion for help. Whether you're willing to do that or not, the important thing is that the wish to become a better person doesn't ever end for you. You can't ever look at yourself and say you're done with this messy business of self improvement.

What does it mean to love unconditionally? Let's unpack the word. Your love isn't subject to conditions. No matter what a person does, you'll still love them. Does this mean you'll always be attracted to them? Does this mean you can stay in a relationship with them forever? No. It means you'll always love them.

I suspect that many many couples these days love their partners unconditionally. Even after they have bad breakups. Even after they tell the other they don't love them anymore.

The problem, as is usual, isn't that humans are bad, but that our understanding of even our own feelings is wrong. Which is why so many turn to religion. Even if we don't know, God does, and we can ask Him to help us understand.
