So, you have to work slowly and methodically here. Essentially, changes in personality can be understood as changes in how your mind ‘quick-reacts’ to stuff. So, say you want to be more funny. When someone says something to you, you have two choices here, to say something not funny, and to say something that is funny. If all you do is say funny stuff 15% more than you used to, then you have succeeded in your goal of becoming a funnier person.
This is important because a lot of people don’t know how to think about going about it. How can you change your personality if you can’t wrap your brain around what it means to be a different person? This gives you a concrete goal to work towards. This also gives you a chance to further clarify what it is you’re looking for. For example, would you rather be a little bit funnier more often, or be a lot funnier less often? This has real effects on how you plan.
Okay, so you’ve isolated a goal, to be more funny; and an approach, to say funny things more often. So, let’s think about it for a second. Why do we tend to say more serious things rather than more funny things? Why are you personally serious rather than funny? Come up with some reasons why this might be the case. Maybe you just don’t know the principles of humor.
Okay so you have a hypothesis, that you don’t know the principles of humor. You now need a plan for testing this hypothesis. A simple way for rectifying the deficiency is to read a book on humor and come up with some principles. You might also ask Quora. I happen to know the best way to get some know-how is to take improv classes.
A plan is simply a blueprint for action. So once you have your plan, you put it into action. Actually do the things you planned to do.
Then return to your hypothesis. Did taking improv classes actually help you be more humorous in your day to day interactions? If so, you can call it a success and start over from the top. If not, then you have some troubleshooting to do. Why didn’t plan A have effect B? Come up with a new hypothesis, a new plan of action, then act, then learn.
Ideally you should be learning at every step of this process, taking stock of yourself and your capabilities. Does this take more time and effort than sitting around and playing video games all the time? Absolutely. I don’t play them anymore, they no longer interest me.
