If everyone needs a guru to arrive at enlightenment, why are real, enlightened gurus so rare in the world? If that is so, wouldn't God be cruel or a joker?

You don’t really need a guru to become enlightened. There’s something special and magical about being in the presence of someone who is enlightened and is allowing their “atman” to manifest. I keep mine reined in most of the time because I don’t want gay guys hitting on me and homeless guys constantly hitting me up.

But the reality here is that if you’re enlightened, becoming a guru is one of the last things you’re going to consider doing and are only going to go down that route if literally everything else doesn’t work for you. And even if you’re enlightened and you’re a guru, that doesn’t mean you’re going to be a good one.

And plenty of non-enlightened people are mistook for enlightened because they give cutesy rehashed advice from other sources.

Don’t get me wrong, being a guru is work. It’s work you have to motivate yourself to do. Even having a strong atman isn’t enough to get people to consider you as someone who can solve their problems and give them spiritual advice. Just like everything else, you have to put yourself out there. That doesn’t just happen.

So how do you become enlightened without a guru? Well, the simple answer is that any spiritual journey can lead to enlightenment if you follow it as strongly and confidently as you can, for as long as it takes. You can find initiation anywhere, you can find insight anywhere, you just have to start looking. Even if a person is not enlightened you can still get insight from them. Sure insight is better if they’re actually enlightened but the difference isn’t really all that great.

It’s the wish for a “sure thing” that ultimately is a barrier for people wanting to become enlightened, and it trips up even people who do have a real enlightened guru on hand to ask questions of and absorb their aura.
