If there is only one God then which one is the one true God? Is it the Trinitarian God Jesus, is it the God of Isreal Yahweh, or is it the Muslim God Allah?

This isn’t as interesting a question as you might think. Monotheism evades the question of which god is the true god through the announcement that there’s only one god, who is all-powerful and loves all. This changes the discussion from who is the real god to what does the real god want? Remember, God is all-powerful, He is all things to all people.

If you try to say that the Christian version of God really is the only valid version, then basically you’re saying that God doesn’t care about Muslims such that He won’t operate through their conception of the divine. That’s not really an omni-benevolent God.

The Muslim take on the question is similar. Their theology is that the Jews, Christians and other “people of the book” all worship the same deity. It’s just that their religion is wrong and the other religions are not correct, the true revelation came to Mohammed and that’s the only way you should approach religion.

The modern Jewish take is somewhat different. The Jewish religion is not built for conversion. If you weren’t born Jewish, then you must truly in your heart want to be Jewish such that you’ll walk down the difficult path of conversion. They’re mostly fine with the idea that God can be all things to all people. But God chose the Jews, and this is what makes them special. God does whatever he does with all the other peoples of the world, and Jews just shrug and keep doing their thing.

Everyone’s pretty okay with the understanding that they’re all the same god, the religions are just different ways to approach him.
