How do you get interested in things? They catch your eye, you want to figure them out. Standing out is how you earn people’s attention. You can stand out in good ways or in bad ways. If you stand out in bad ways then the attention you earn isn’t likely to be validating or useful.
What’s the difference between standing out in good ways vs. bad ways? Simple, it comes down to how much thought you put into the other people’s mindsets. You’re the one imposing, they’re the one just going about their day. You need to think really hard about how to make sure that whatever imposition you make is a pleasant one and not an unpleasant one.
Getting attention is one thing, keeping it is another one. There’s an art to conversation that is useful to learn. One thing that helped me a lot was to learn improvisational storytelling, colloquially called improv. This teaches you the mechanics of pulling random things out of your head and shaping them into a story, a sequence of events followed by the characters.
Also you have to actually find out what is important to people and make sure that you stay connected to that. You can’t just talk about yourself all the time, but that’s what you’ll start doing if you aren’t constantly paying attention to this other person’s personality, character, and how they want to grow.
If you represent a person’s best pathway for personal growth, something you can figure out how to do with simple, open, frank discussions, then you’ll become the bedrock of their life.
