What are some tips for a 30 year old who would like to change their clothing style?

At 30, it’s time to start spending a little money on your clothes. I personally like the 1MX shirts from Express, they’re the only shirt I can buy without having to take it immediately to the tailors to get it fitted. Mens clothes in America are mostly made for really fat dudes. If you find yourself at Express, check out their funky socks, I always get compliments on them.

I like to wear sports jackets when it’s not too warm out. For these I’ll browse clearance racks at department stores. While you’re there look for cool looking belts. Take your jackets to have them altered to fit. Fit is by far the most important aspect of style. Expect to spend another $25–40 on getting your jackets altered, and shirts too if they don’t fit. You buy them to fit around your shoulders, then alter them to fit your waist. You also want to shorten the sleeves so they’re the right length. More important for jackets than shirts.

You can keep your jeans, assuming they are dark colored and don’t have any rips in them. You can get away without dress slacks for now so long as you have decent jeans to wear with your dress shirts and sports jackets.

But you will need nice shoes. Clarks makes nice looking, comfortable shoes, I’ve owned many over the years. Make sure you get shoe trees, and spray the conditioner on them once a month so you’re not like me and have to throw them out every year. Get three pairs and rotate them. Shoes last a lot longer when you give them breaks.
