Well, not me. I first started programming around the fourth grade, I must’ve been around 10. That said, I never got serious with it until I was 27 or so.
If you want my advice, I’d say to start with Ruby and learn Rails. Web development is the hottest field these days and it’s going to stay that way for a long time. Rails is the best web development framework. Code school is the best way to learn it if you can afford it.
The main factor in your ability to be successful should you go this route will be your willingness to move. In hot markets, code school grads get snapped up for $50k+/year. In not-so-hot markets, you could be waiting for months for a single interview. If you’re not willing to move to a hot market, then the next best thing to do would be to learn .NET. You can get a .NET job anywhere, but .NET web dev jobs don’t pay nearly as well.
The best way to get started once you’ve finished code school is to find a good recruiter. Just put your resume up on job boards and answer any recruiter emails that look remotely interesting. Eventually you’ll find one worth being loyal to, but remember that you have to kiss a lot of frogs to find your prince.
Good luck, you probably won’t need it though.
