Why do I think that the question "What is the meaning of life?" is a useless and selfish question that humans ask themselves?

When you find meaning in something, that means you stop looking for underlying reasons. Finding the answer for the meaning of life essentially means you’ve stopped searching. It’s a nice thing to have but it can be fleeting. If you think the meaning of your life is a particular relationship as so many do, then you’ll be lost and rudderless when that relationship ends, as most do.

On another level, you can never reach a satisfyingly definitive answer that’s specific enough to be useful to you yet at the same time general enough to apply to everyone. To try to answer the question in a universal sense is pretty fruitless.

I can tell you the meaning of my life. It’s to meditate and think and grow. Everything I do in my normal life, I funnel into my meditation, thinking and growth. These things are pursued not for any goal here on Earth, but in the vague sense of ‘consciousness growth’. I believe that meditation, thinking and growth will help me not just in this lifetime, but in all subsequent lifetimes too.

My former roommate might answer, “to have sex with as many women and have as much power as I can.” Which answer is right? Obviously neither. Platitudes like “the meaning of life is to love others” can really fall flat to a lot of people.
