If God is close to those that are broken in heart and crushed in spirit, why so much depression and suicide, why didn't he rescue them like he says he would?

God has a bigger perspective than we do. We have no idea what happens to our souls after we pass, but God doesn’t just know, He can decide also. It’s likely He figured out the best place for them, whether it’s Heaven, another Earthly body, or something else we can’t even comprehend.
