Start with the red root. Feel the earthly, primal sensations that arise, let them flow through you. Notice them imprinting on the mind, filling you with need, concern, the power that comes from just doing whatever comes to mind. Imagine the gate opening in your mind and move on.

The orange, sacral chakra is the set of creative energy and the beginning of self. Open this chakra and allow the sexually charged energies to move freely through your body and mind. Think about the fact that while your sense of self emanates from your genitals, sex is an illusion, satisfying biology and not spirit. This is the beginning of the spiritual journey, moving up from base physicality to purity, focus, and light.

Move up to the yellow navel chakra, where digestion takes in matter and provides energy to the rest of the body. While the sacrum is where the self is generated, the navel is where it’s discovered. Your gut is often called the ‘second brain’, there’s a large nerve here that has broad reaching effects on the whole body. While your mental self resides in the head brain, your bodily self sensation comes from here. Open this chakra and allow the energy to suffuse you.

Time for the green heart chakra, the gateway between the mind and the body, bodily seat of emotion. Open this chakra and allow compassionate energy to flow outward from it. Higher spiritual and mental energies mix with lower bodily energies here and create a knowledge and understanding not present where there’s not the mix. The root cannot understand the crown, and the crown just wishes the root would go away. Only the heart can really grasp wholeness.

Move up to the blue throat chakra, the seat of communication and purification. Guilt arises when this chakra is blocked, as the desires and actions derived from lower centers cannot find expression or understanding from the third eye. Success in life comes from how well you communicate and fluidly express thoughts that come from both body and mind. Most psychic powers are associated with the third eye, but a few emanate here, such as spiritual time perception and freedom from dangers. Feel it’s expressive energy mix with the world around you and then suffuse the body.

The indigo third eye chakra is the spiritual muscle of the body, it can be worked on and improved constantly to assist with spiritual vision, just like the physical muscles of the body can be exercised to make them more powerful, flexible, and durable. You have a physical brain that handles the physical parts of thinking and organizing, the third eye is the spiritual brain, more like a sense organ in the way your actual eyes are connected to the brain via the optic nerve. Feel it’s piercing energy flow through you as you open it’s brilliant bluish-purplish gate.

Finally we reach the crown, traditionally not considered a chakra, as it’s not actually in your body. There is no subject nor object in this chakra, it’s pure existence, funneling heavenly energy into the body. Open this chakra and feel brilliant, multi-colored light radiate through you.

Now doesn’t that feel nice? You start with the root because you need to be grounded before you can push up to the heavens. The point of chakra work is to build up that experiential connection with the body, so you can feel whatever it is your spiritual centers want to tell you. We unconsciously block ourselves from feeling certain things, from letting emotions and thoughts from overtaking us. Opening the chakras increases the range of things we can sense, and keeps them from subconsciously overruling our higher, spiritual wishes for ourselves.
