Do gifted people inherent their special ability from their family or is it randomly chosen by God?

As somebody who is extremely gifted myself, and spent a lot of time contemplating the spiritual underpinnings of our reality, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about this. There are a few aspects to consider here. There’s a) the social aspect, b) the individual aspect, and finally, c) the divine plan aspect. I’ll deal with them in turn.

First, I have determined that culture and how one grew up play a very large role in how you see yourself. Everyone, given the right coaching, can learn anything. It’s really that simple. What personality and giftedness does for you is make you good at learning and doing things without the proper coaching. As far as I’ve been able to tell, nothing inherent about a person’s abilities comes from their parents. Abilities aren’t genetic. Given that anybody can learn anything, if someone’s parent were, say, an excellent piano player, then in many cases they’ll be able to coach their kid in a way conducive to developing proficiency. But it’s just as likely that the parent will be too busy to teach what they’ve learned to their child.

This brings us to the individual aspect. People have inborn spiritual potentials that they’ll reach and hopefully surpass during their Earthly life. This potential affects many many things about your life. People with extremely high potentials, well, it doesn’t really matter what their circumstances are. Say your dad was an amazing piano player but other than a few stilted lessons, he wasn’t able to teach you anything at all about it. However, you were able to pick it up all on your own because you had a burning desire to prove you’re better. Anybody can learn anything, but only very few people can push themselves to learn something completely on their own. People with amazingly high potentials, well, they are the subjects of the rags to riches stories that we all love to hear. Jackie Chan rising from squalor to international super-stardom. Elon Musk working tirelessly to move himself, then his family, across an ocean to put himself where riches and success were being made.

This finally brings us to divine planning. Your life isn’t purely your own and God will gently, and sometimes not-so-gently nudge you into a place where you can grow most efficiently. When I was deciding what to do with my life at the fresh young age of 29, having burned through most of my twenties meditating and developing spiritual abilities, I decided I wanted my own roof over my head and a career. I’d always enjoyed the arts and so I considered becoming an actor. Got as far as taking on-camera acting classes. I liked acting, but I didn’t have the wherewithal to push myself through to my first gigs. At the end of the class, we performed in front of an agent and told that some students do get signed right out of class. Didn’t happen to me and I gave up on it. Months later I got an email from an old friend needing help on a website. Did well on that project, soon I had a career in programming.

Remember, anybody can learn and do anything well. But during this life, there are only so many things we can do. God keeps us from doing some things so that we can better fulfill our lives here on Earth.
