Please note that this is a Swedenborgian conception of the afterlife. You can find out more by searching YouTube for “offTheLeftEye.” I am a member and donor of the Swedenborg foundation. My views are however my own and won’t match up perfectly with theirs.
People can spend time with whoever they choose and you can be in more than one place at one time. Experience and awareness are unbroken, what changes is time. Events “compress” and get focused on learning. So you might spend what feels like a lifetime with each person, but once you’re ready to move on, you just do.
In this way, all the inner cruft that built up during physical existence that holds you back from fully accepting spiritual existence gets gently processed out.
Once your spiritual “induction” is complete, you find a home, meet your neighbors, and find work. One day you might find one of your old friends has joined the afterlife, and you’ll participate in their induction the same way yours did when you died. All these inductions exists on a timeless plane. So it matters not who dies first, time doesn’t work the same way there.
